1. Installing and uninstalling Icons2Pics

Please read the README file that comes with the application.  Or click here to download one.

2. Introduction

What is Icons2Pics?  It's a batch-export application that allows the user to convert application icons into images of various sizes.  All you have to do is drag and drop one or more applications onto the listbox, which also serves as a drop box, choose an export format, select image sizes and then click on Export after setting an export path.  That's pretty easy, right?

Whether you have several applications or a few dozens of them, Icons2Pics can quickly export images to a folder at the destination of your choice.  Each file is named after a corresponding application and its size, so you can easily tell which image is for which application at what size.

3. Preferences

When you first launch any new application, it's always a good idea for you to open Preferences.  Okay, why not?  In order to open Preferences, choose Preferences under Icons2Pics.  (See Screenshot 3-1.)

The first tab is Settings.  And you don't have many settings to work on.  (See Screenshot 3-2.)  The descriptions of some of the checkboxes under this tab are given in the following.

  • Require restart: Enable this checkbox if you want the application to automatically restart itself when you close Preferences window.  By so doing, you can make sure your application is updated with the latest changes you've made in Preferences.

  • Make sound when done: With this check box enabled, the application will play a short sound when the export process is complete.

  • Confirm deletion: If you want confirmation before removing an application (or applications), enable this checkbox.

  • Show file path instead: By default, when icons2pics starts up, it shows a blue-colored instruction label below the listbox.  If you enable this checkbox, icons2pics will replace it with a text field that shows the file path of the selected application.

  • Sound beep for duplicate: icons2pics does not allow the user to import applications sharing the same name.  With this checkbox enabled, if the file that the user is trying to import shares the same name of an existing file in the list, the application will sound beep.

Furthermore, under Settings, find a box that is labeled Default open folder.  Set a default folder by clicking on the Select button if you want.  When you choose File > Open to locate an application for Icons2Pics to read, Icons2Pics will point to the folder or volume you set here.  By default, it will point to Desktop.  And it will automatically revert to Desktop if Icons2Pics does not locate the selected default folder when it starts up.  It may be a good idea to set it to the Applications folder.  (See Screenshot 3-3.)

Next, let's switch to the Export tab.  (See Screenshot 3-4.)  The settings you make under this tab will apply to those on the main application window when you launch it.  The default export folder, which is shown at the top of the window is different from the default open folder under Settings.  The default export folder is a destination path where the application will export icon images.  Exploring the drop-down menu, you have 8 export formats to choose from including JPEG, PNG and TIFF.  (See Screenshot 3-5.)

Furthermore, enable any of the checkboxes for export image sizes.  Note that Icons2Pics will not necessarily produce 512-pixel and 256-pixel images.  Some applications may contain an icon package (.icns) including as large as 128 pixels.  Icons2Pics will not produce images larger than what the icon package has.
